After being sacked by Roma last year, renowned coach Mourinho, despite expressing his desire to return to coaching multiple times publicly, has yet to find a new job. In a recent interview, he talked about his regret for staying at Roma after being fired, admitting that he regretted staying due to emotional reasons. He mentioned having many choices at the time but chose to stay because of emotional attachment. Looking back, he wouldn't have made the same choice.
Despite initial success, Mourinho's collaboration with Roma had its honeymoon phase, such as leading Roma to win the UEFA Conference League against the odds. However, the turning point came when Roma lost the UEFA Europa League final the following year. At that time, Mourinho and Roma were in talks to extend their contract. Both sides believed that losing the final shouldn't be a reason to give up, so they chose to renew the contract and continue their cooperation to pursue more honors.
In a recent interview with The Telegraph, Mourinho talked about his regret for renewing his contract with Roma and admitted that he received lucrative offers from the Portuguese national team and Saudi Arabia at the same time. Even his friends, family, and agent advised him to leave after the UEFA Europa League final last year. However, he felt the "emotional" attraction of Roma at the time, which led him to make the decision to renew the contract. This was the first time in his life that he stayed with a team for "emotional" reasons.
Looking at the outcome, undoubtedly, the renewal was not the best decision for both sides. Roma sacked Mourinho, and Mourinho regretted renewing his contract. Subsequently, Mourinho talked about his hopes for the future, expressing his desire for fair treatment if he coaches again. He hopes the outside world won't be so harsh on him and won't have overly high expectations, such as expecting him to coach a team almost relegated but with the goal of winning the Champions League, which he believes is unfair. |
