The Manchester United manager's team performance has been unstable, fluctuating between winning against strong opponents and losing to lower-ranked teams. Rumors suggest that the new owner, Ratcliffe, has considered replacing him. However, due to certain reasons, United is still forced to be managed by Ten Hag. So, what are these reasons?
Since Ratcliffe acquired 27.7% of Manchester United's shares, he has emphasized the need for United to qualify for the Champions League to maintain the club's financial health. Entry into the Champions League would generate substantial revenue, allowing United to invest in more preferred and capable players. However, United's current situation is not particularly promising.
Currently, United ranks sixth, trailing fourth-placed Aston Villa by 8 points, while fifth-placed Tottenham, with a game in hand, leads by 6 points. This means that while United retains hope for a top-four finish, the challenge remains significant. Therefore, in the remaining matches, United must achieve consecutive victories and rely on rivals for a chance to overtake them. However, for the currently inconsistent United, winning every remaining match is highly unlikely.
Financial analysts have pointed out that while Ratcliffe desires Champions League qualification for United and may wish for Ten Hag's departure if not achieved, ironically, Ten Hag's inability to secure this spot could increase the likelihood of Ratcliffe sacking him. Missing out on the Champions League means a reduction of around £50 million in expected revenue, and sacking Ten Hag with a year left on his contract would cost the club approximately £12 million. This would negatively impact United's financial health. Therefore, the possibility of Ten Hag's dismissal is even smaller. Additionally, funds for hiring a new coach and buying new players are also a concern, as years of lavish spending on player acquisitions and high wages have pushed United's finances close to the red line. |
