The Bitcoin emoji cultural movement, led by over 20 crypto projects, initiated an online petition.

On March 13th, Nexo launched the "Bitcoin Deserves an Emoji" initiative, with over 20 crypto organizations including BTC Inc, Bitget, Brink, Chainalysis, Hacken, and Nansen joining the initiative. This initiative aims to unite the global cryptocurrency community in advocating for the addition of a Bitcoin emoji to digital keyboards, emphasizing that cryptocurrencies are not just currencies but also symbols of technology and culture in today's society.

The initiative, driven by the community, began with a 50-day petition on Change.org, followed by a formal proposal submitted to the Unicode Consortium in 2024 to add the Bitcoin emoji. A similar proposal was rejected in 2020.

This advocacy effort is supported by several prominent projects including Nexo, Brink, Bitget, Chainalysis, Polygon, Brave, BTC Inc, Hacken, CryptoQuant, Nansen, Unstoppable Domains, Liquity, Mara, Busha, Zulu, Bware Labs, Meta4 Capital, Sift, MarketAcross, Bitcompare, Bithomp, Milkroad, Crypto Oasis, Cadenza, and others. They are collectively dedicated to celebrating and advocating for Bitcoin's integration into the digital lexicon through emoji as a universal language.

Organizations Leading the Bitcoin Emoji Culture

As new highs are reached and the halving approaches, Bitcoin reaches milestones.
In the past week, Bitcoin has broken its historical high from November 2021 three times: on Tuesday, Friday, and over the weekend, surpassing $69,100, $69,200, and $70,000 respectively. With Bitcoin surpassing $71,000, its market cap has soared to $1.398 trillion, surpassing silver ($1.379 trillion) and ranking eighth globally in terms of assets.

At the same time, according to BTC.com, there are less than 40 days left until the next Bitcoin halving event, as a halving occurs every 210,000 blocks. The next halving is expected to occur when the block height reaches 840,000 in April 2024, at which point the block reward will decrease from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC.

At such an important milestone moment, the content expressed by the Bitcoin emoji as a cultural symbol can be diverse.

Emojis originated in Japan in the 1990s and became a basic element of communication among community friends after the popularization of network communication technology. According to Unicode data, emojis are used in digital communication by 92% of Internet users worldwide.

From this perspective, the Bitcoin emoji is more like a conveyance of the power and culture similar to memes. Going back to Richard Dawkins' concept of MEME proposed in "The Selfish Gene," we can understand how the Bitcoin emoji becomes an information unit that deeply embeds in culture through dissemination among people. The power of emojis lies in their ability to quickly touch people's emotions and resonate with them. Like memes, they spread among people, forming a cultural consensus.
