Zama, an open-source cryptography company, is dedicated to Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE), often referred to as the "holy grail of cryptography." At the time, FHE was more theoretical mathematics than practical code—it was slow, expensive, required significant cryptographic expertise, and only supported a few practical applications. Over the next few years—largely due to the relentless efforts of our team—we systematically addressed these issues, making FHE universally accessible for non-cryptographic developers for the first time. I am incredibly proud of this work. This achievement alone is significant.
Today, Zama offers a powerful open-source FHE library and solutions. From independent developers to large enterprises, anyone can build end-to-end encrypted applications out of the box for users. Developers can start using it without any knowledge of cryptography. Our FHE solution builds on top of TFHE, supporting any type of application, no matter how complex, greatly expanding the applicability of FHE.
In addition to security and developer experience, we have consistently focused on performance. Since launch, we have increased the speed of FHE solutions by 20 times and expect to reach 100 times soon. This key performance milestone unlocks critical confidential blockchain and AI use cases. Dedicated FHE hardware accelerators slated for release within the next two years will bridge the final gap to enable network-scale applications, such as confidential Large Language Models (LLMs) and encrypted Software as a Service (SaaS).
In addition to advancing our research, this funding provides us with years of runway and necessary resources to support our partners today in putting FHE into production. While our partners span a wide range of industries, we've found blockchain to be a key market focus for Zama this year. A significant issue with blockchain is that all transactions and data are publicly visible, posing challenges for developers needing to use sensitive information (such as personal or financial data) in applications. To address this, we created fhEVM, a confidential smart contract solution that allows developers to create confidential on-chain applications in Solidity. fhEVM can be integrated into any EVM-compatible chain, ensuring that the state remains encrypted from transaction submission to smart contract transaction processing. |
