Despite reported reductions in total betting amounts or "handles," sports betting revenue in the state of Mississippi continues to increase year-over-year. The monthly revenue has reached $6.7 million, marking a 31.4% growth from January 2023's $5.1 million and a 36.7% increase from December 2023's $4.9 million.
Although the total betting amount for January reached $44.6 million, this represents a 22.0% decrease from the same month last year, which had a total of $57.2 million. It is also an 8.8% decrease from December 2023's $48.9 million.
The coastal casinos in Mississippi remain popular among bettors, generating a total betting amount of $291 million and a revenue of $4 million in retail sports betting. A significant portion of this ($1.6 million) comes from American football betting, with a total betting amount of $120 million.
In other regions, the central casinos earned $1.5 million in revenue from a total bet of $9.1 million, with the highest return on investment coming from continuous win bets. These casinos gained $1.1 million in revenue from a total bet of $4 million. In contrast, the northern casinos reported a total revenue of $6.4 million in January, with $631,180 coming from American football bets and a total betting amount of $2.1 million.
In the latest reports, lawmakers in Mississippi are considering several bills to legalize online sports betting. Currently, residents can only legally place sports bets at approved retail operators. House Bill 774 has passed in the House and is under Senate review, with support from eight state representatives. If passed, the bill will allow 26 physical casinos in Mississippi to launch online sports betting services, with each casino able to partner with one licensed platform for betting.
Other legislative proposals, such as HB271 and HB635, are also attempting to push for the legalization of sports betting. HB606, signed into law last year, empowered a sports betting working group in Mississippi to conduct a comprehensive investigation into sports betting. Initially intended to allow each physical casino to collaborate with online sports betting sites, its scope was significantly reduced in committee.
