Bitcoin developer Bryan Bishop stated, "The Bitcoin developer mailing list has been migrated from its original hosting on Sourceforge.net to the Linux Foundation and OSUOSL, and now it's being migrated to Google Groups."
Existing subscribers of the mailing list are urged to take immediate action, as old list emails will no longer be accepted starting from February 2024. The new mailing list location can be accessed here.
For those who missed the invitation or prefer manual subscription, alternative options are provided, including email subscription or registration using a Google account. The announcement reads, "If you missed the invitation and want to subscribe manually, you have two options." "You can email bitcoindev+subscribe@googlegroups.com and then reply to the automated email you'll receive (check your spam folder). Alternatively, you can subscribe via the online interface at https://groups.google.com/g/bitcoindev, using a Google account (different from Gmail - you can use any email address you like to create a Google account)."
The announcement also emphasizes the importance of choosing to receive all messages to facilitate active participation and maintain continuity of dialogue, ensuring replies are appropriately threaded.
Furthermore, the migration ensures the preservation and accessibility of archived mailing list content (without requiring a Google account) and provides external backups where old mailing list emails can be viewed. It's noted that the moderators "are not relying on Google to do anything critical here; they are just using Google as a channel for already public information."
