The South Korean Web3 social karaoke platform Somesing was hacked for 730 million SSX tokens!

The South Korean blockchain-based social karaoke platform Somesing experienced a shocking hacking incident on Saturday (27th). According to an official announcement, hackers stole a total of 730 million SSX tokens in the early hours of the 27th and transferred them to an unknown wallet. Based on the current price of SSX at $0.0158, the loss exceeds $11.53 million USD.

The team stated that among the stolen 730 million SSX tokens, 504 million tokens were yet to be allocated and planned to be circulated by the end of 2025. The remaining 226 million SSX tokens were held by the foundation and had already entered the circulating supply. The official emphasized that, based on the current investigation, the hacker incident was not related to any member of the SOMESING team. From the modus operandi of the attack, it is speculated to be the work of professional hackers specializing in virtual asset hacking. As a result, as of the end of January 2024, 489 million SSX tokens have been circulating beyond the original planned supply.

South Korean exchanges Upbit and Bithumb have temporarily suspended SSX deposits and withdrawals.

Somesing operates on Klaytn, a blockchain project under South Korea's largest social media platform Kakao. The platform claims to be the world's first blockchain-based online singing platform, rewarding singers who upload singing content with native token SSX. The tokens are rewarded by listening users through smart contracts, with singers receiving 60% of the tokens and the remaining 40% allocated to the platform for purchasing song copyrights, platform, and community operations.

In response to the hacking incident, the Somesing Foundation has taken the following emergency measures:

- Reported the incident to South Korea's JC Hall and Interpol, requesting an investigation.
- Urgently requested domestic exchanges (Upbit, Bithumb) where SSX is listed to suspend deposits and withdrawals to prevent further hacking attacks. Similarly, other exchanges such as HTX (formerly Houbi) and Gate.io, which also list SSX, have not released relevant announcements.
- Collaborated closely with Klaytn Foundation and Uppsala Security, a cybersecurity company that partners with Interpol, to track the transaction history of the hacked SSX tokens to determine their final destination and identify the hacker's wallets.

The Somesing Foundation noted that if the stolen assets are confirmed to have been transferred to exchanges, they will request the exchanges to assist in freezing the wallet assets and tracing the hacker's identities for further legal action. The official also warned that South Korean authorities and Interpol will be involved in the investigation, calling on the hackers to voluntarily return the stolen assets.

SSX experienced a flash crash of 16% following the hacking incident on the early morning of the 27th, plummeting from a high of $0.01829 to $0.01537, marking its lowest level since mid-September of last year. As of the time of writing, it is trading at $0.01575, still down 5% in the past 24 hours.
