A man in Ontario, Canada, lost over 300,000 dollars in gambling, but unwilling to accept defeat, he took the surprising step of suing the casino, seeking nearly one million dollars in compensation, claiming that the casino allowed him to enter.
According to the Windsor Star, Tarwinder Shokar from Ontario is demanding Caesars Windsor Casino to compensate him for the lost bet of 342,000 dollars and an additional punitive compensation of 500,000 dollars. On October 17, 2018, Shokar arrived at Caesars Casino with a bank draft of 55,000 dollars and received VIP treatment from the casino. Reportedly, Shokar exchanged the money for chips and gambled for an hour at the roulette table, then dined in the casino's restaurant using the casino's complimentary shuttle service. Shokar continued gambling with an additional 25,000 dollars but ended up losing it all.
Despite the casino having prepared a hotel room for him, Shokar chose to take a taxi back to his area the next morning, accumulating a fare of 800 dollars, all covered by the casino. Shokar lost approximately 92,000 dollars at the casino over the course of two days. A few days later, he returned to the casino with a bank draft of 100,000 dollars and deposited two more drafts of 75,000 dollars each into his casino account. Shokar lost a total of 250,000 dollars that day. Shokar sued the casino in 2019, and the case was submitted to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice this year.
It is reported that Shokar had a gambling addiction many years ago, and after losing his fortune, he once contemplated suicide by standing in front of a truck. Although the suicide attempt failed, he later received a substantial insurance settlement. Shokar's representative lawyer, Iain MacKinnon, stated that Shokar is a pathological gambler who has been banned from multiple Ontario casinos, and the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) and the casino should have prohibited his entry. |
