Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin has just responded to community opinions on Twitter, clearly expressing his definition of Validium. He stated that building certain applications on top of Validium instead of using Ethereum as the base for Data Availability (DA) in Rollups is the correct choice.

Not using Ethereum's decentralized network is Validium. The definition of Validium is once again sparking discussion. With the upcoming Constantinople upgrade, the introduction of EIP-4844 may bring about changes in the Layer 2 ecosystem. As a result, discussions around modularity, Rollups, data availability layers, Layer 2, and other keywords are intensifying and becoming competitive.

Among them, the definition and legitimacy issues related to Rollups are once again mentioned. Taiko, a project focusing on the first type of Rollups (ZK-EVM), and its founder @danielwang.eth expressed on Twitter today that any Ethereum Rollup using an external data availability layer (DA) is considered Validium. However, this statement triggered a response from Vitalik.

Vitalik agrees that some services should utilize Validium. He emphasizes that the core of Rollups is unconditional security, which means that even if others collude, users can withdraw their assets. If the data availability layer depends on an external system, this cannot be achieved, and the network should be considered Validium.

While Validiums sacrifice some decentralization, they can use decentralized data availability layers to ensure the normal operation of the system and enhance network security. These trade-offs will be made based on specific application requirements.

However, Vitalik does not reject Validium. He states that Validium is the right choice for many applications because using a well-designed decentralized data availability layer system can indeed improve the security of Validium, making it a good approach.

Previously, Vitalik explained the advantages and disadvantages of various Layer 2 solutions. The Ethereum roadmap still centers around Rollups rather than Validium. However, from today's post, it seems that Vitalik is not opposed to Validium and sees it as potentially compatible with Ethereum's value capture.

Is the upgrade necessary, or is it unavoidable?

Ethereum, this needs to be looked into as well.
