On September 1st, the transfer window for the new football season officially closed. Among the many transfers, the English Premier League set a record with £2.44 billion in transfer spending, reaffirming the Premier League's status as a massive commercial powerhouse. However, even with the Premier League's significant financial clout, many English clubs remain concerned about the threat from Saudi Arabia. Unlike the transfer window in European leagues, the transfer window in the Saudi league doesn't close until September 6th. What's most shocking is that Saudi's Al Nassr FC is reportedly preparing a £200 million bid for Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah.
Due to the Saudi transfer window closing a week later than European leagues, several managers have expressed concerns about the threat from Saudi clubs. This includes Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who have called on UEFA to take action during the transfer window. Their concerns stem not only from the financial power of Saudi clubs but also from the risk of missing out on new signings if they secure deals during this extended window, which could leave clubs in a difficult position.
Now, as the European transfer window has ended, Liverpool's fears have become a reality. The interest of Saudi's Al Nassr in Salah has been widely known, and while Liverpool had previously refused to sell their star player, they are now in a more vulnerable position. Al Nassr is said to be preparing a substantial offer, with reports suggesting a potential €234 million bid to bring Salah to their club. If this report turns out to be true, it would break the world football transfer fee record, surpassing the €222 million paid for Neymar when he joined Paris Saint-Germain.
Facing such a tempting offer, can Liverpool resist the temptation? It's worth considering that Liverpool's rise in recent years was partly due to the sale of Philippe Coutinho for €160 million, which allowed them to acquire key players like Sadio Mané, Salah, and Virgil van Dijk. This could be another moment for Liverpool's management to demonstrate their wisdom, potentially by selling Salah and rebuilding the team in the coming year. It's undoubtedly a challenging decision for the club. |
