In terms of notable dates in Bitcoin history, December 13th holds a special significance, although it is less publicized than the release of the white paper on October 31st or the formal launch of the network on January 3rd.
No, the absence on December 13th is noteworthy: it marks the last known activity of Bitcoin's pseudonymous creator Satoshi Nakamoto at 4:45 pm Eastern Time on December 13, 2010.
Their last public message was posted on December 12th, focusing on the prevention of denial-of-service attacks. By that time, Satoshi had already handed over the role of Bitcoin's open-source maintainer to developer Gavin Andresen.
On December 11th, 2010, Satoshi expressed concerns about Bitcoin's increasing mainstream attention on the Bitcointalk forum. This surge in interest was due to WikiLeaks considering Bitcoin as a donation method after losing services from major payment processors.

Satoshi, somewhat infamously, commented, "It would have been nice to get this attention in any other context. WikiLeaks has kicked the hornet's nest, and the swarm is headed towards us."
It's worth noting that Satoshi continued private communication with early Bitcoin developers, even though they had stepped away from their previously public (and quite prolific) roles.
Several months later, Satoshi sent the last known private message in an email to developer Michael Hern.
They wrote, "I've moved on to other things."
Satoshi's identity has long been a subject of intense speculation and controversy, especially in the years following their withdrawal from the public stage. Their true identity remains unknown. |
