Spanish 21 Rules

Differences between Spanish 21 and conventional play in 21

Spanish 21 uses 6 or 8 Spanish decks of cards, with each deck containing 48 cards. Four 10-point cards are removed from each deck. The basic gameplay is similar to regular 21, but there are key differences:

- Player wins with a total of 21 points.
- Player's blackjack (21 points) beats the dealer's blackjack.
- Doubling down is allowed on any number of cards.
- Aces can be re-split after splitting.
- Players can surrender after doubling down, forfeiting half the bet.
- The payout for a 5-card 21 is 2:3, for a 6-card 21 is 1:2, and for a 7-card or more 21 is 1:3.
- A 21 with a 6-7-8 or 7-7-7 combination pays 2:3, while suited 21 pays 1:2, and suited spades pay 1:3.
- If a player has three 7s of the same suit and the dealer's face-up card is a 7, a bet of $5 to $24 results in a $1,000 payout, and a bet of $25 or more results in a $5,000 payout. Other players also receive a $50 bonus, but this rule does not apply after splitting.

Spanish 21 Considerations:

- Dealer hits on soft 17.
- All 21 bonuses do not count the doubled portion of the bet.
- Six Spanish decks are used.

Spanish 21 Strategy:

H – Hit
S – Stand
D – Double down
P – Split
Rh – Surrender if the first two cards, otherwise hit
S3 – Stand, unless there are 3 or more cards in the hand, then hit
S4 – Stand, unless there are 4 or more cards in the hand, then hit
S5 – Stand, unless there are 5 or more cards in the hand, then hit
S6 – Stand, unless there are 6 or more cards in the hand, then hit
D3 – Double down, unless there are 3 or more cards in the hand, then hit
D4 – Double down, unless there are 4 or more cards in the hand, then hit
D5 – Double down, unless there are 5 or more cards in the hand, then hit
D6 – Double down, unless there are 6 or more cards in the hand, then hit
Always hit if there's a chance to get a 6-7-8 bonus.
Always hit if there's a chance to get a suited 6-7-8 bonus.
Always hit if there's a chance to get a suited spades 6-7-8 bonus.
Always hit if there are two 7s (potential for a big prize).

Spanish 21 Casino Advantage:

Based on the above basic strategy, the casino advantage in Spanish 21 is 0.76%. However, if the dealer must stand on a soft 17, the advantage drops to 0.40%, lower than the 0.43% in Atlantic City's conventional 21.

Typically, dealers hit on soft 17, but some casinos have the rule that any 17 must stand. Some of these casinos include all casinos in Atlantic City, all casinos in Indiana, all casinos in Ontario, Canada, and Foxwoods, Connecticut.

Spanish 21 When the Player has the Same Cards as the Dealer:

Some casinos offer an additional bet where the player wins if one or both of their initial cards match the dealer's face-up card. Using six decks, a different suit pays 1:4, while the same suit pays 1:9. With eight decks, a different suit pays 1:3, and the same suit pays 1:12. The casino advantage with six decks is 3.06%, and with eight decks, it is 2.99%.
