More than 3.4% of Ethereum smart contracts may have vulnerabilities, according to a research team of five from Singapore and the United Kingdom. Their research report indicates that Ethereum worth millions of dollars may be at risk due to poorly written code in smart contracts.
The authors of the paper delved into Ethereum smart contracts, stating that these contracts carry tokens worth millions of dollars and are immutable once deployed. Their research focused on identifying three types of vulnerabilities:
1. Permanently locking funds.
2. Accidentally exposing the contract to any user.
3. Being terminable by anyone.
The dangers of relying on unaudited smart contracts have been well-documented, with known losses of $500 million in the past year due to vulnerabilities in contract code. Half of these incidents were related to Ethereum, with one example being the ""multiple signature"" bug in the Ethereum Parity wallet, resulting in the freezing of $168 million. |
