"I believe every football enthusiast shares the same dream – to personally be at the stadium, cheering for their favorite team. However, due to the current pandemic, everyone can only shout in front of the television at home. But in the world, nothing is impossible! Recently, the English Premier League champions, Manchester City Football Club, announced a collaboration with Sony to build the world's first ""metaverse"" football stadium.
Etihad Stadium is the home ground of the top-tier English football team, Manchester City. The team announced on February 18 that they have signed a three-year agreement with Sony, providing virtual reality experts and utilizing Hawk-Eye, a subsidiary, for image analysis and skeletal tracking technology. Manchester City hopes fans can enjoy all the benefits of a virtual sports arena. Although travel restrictions for the new Champions League still hinder some people's travel options, watching games in an immersive metaverse might satisfy fans who long to experience the match environment again. The team is eliminating geographical barriers for fans who want to attend live or record games, and they are in the process of constructing a virtual Etihad Stadium.
Nuria Tarre, Chief Marketing Officer of City Football Group, told Inews on February 18, ""We can imagine that the whole point of having the metaverse is that you can relive a game, you can watch the game live, you can participate in the game in different ways from different angles, you can fill the stadium as you want because it is infinite, it is entirely virtual."" Sony's Hawk-Eye subsidiary has long been dedicated to enhancing the sports experience for audiences and officials. It aids officials in making real-time judgments during matches through professional replay technology. Its visualization application will be used to recreate the size of Etihad Stadium in the metaverse.
As everyone is aware, the pandemic has severely impacted the revenue of European football clubs, especially with a significant reduction in attendance under social distancing measures. Therefore, the club is exploring the idea of allowing fans to ""meet"" players in the virtual world of the metaverse." |
