October 31st was the deadline for submitting bids for the 2034 FIFA World Cup. FIFA officials confirmed that after Australia announced its withdrawal, Saudi Arabia is the only country bidding to host the 2034 World Cup. On October 9th, the Saudi Arabian Football Federation officially announced its bid to host the 2034 World Cup, receiving support from the Asian Football Confederation and multiple FIFA members. According to the rule of rotating World Cup hosting among continents, after Saudi Arabia hosts the 2034 World Cup, the next Asian country to host the World Cup will be in 2050. Japan has already expressed its desire to host the World Cup before 2050, and the next opportunity for an Asian Football Confederation member to bid for the World Cup will be at least in 2062.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino posted on social media, saying, ""The greatest event on Earth will be hosted by North America (United States, Canada, and Mexico) in 2026, followed by two consecutive tournaments in 2030 in Africa (Morocco) and Europe (Portugal and Spain), and a centenary celebration in South America with Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay hosting. In 2034, it will be Asia's turn (Saudi Arabia). Three tournaments, five continents, and ten countries participating; this truly globalizes football. |
