The metaverse has made progress again! Previously, there was no sense of touch in the mouth, but now it's here! Virtual smoking, virtual toothbrushing, and virtual kissing all feel completely real! Recently, VR eyewear devices have been improved with the use of ultrasonic sensors, allowing users to experience the sensations of the mouth, lips, and surrounding areas in an immersive setting.

Carnegie Mellon University, located in Pennsylvania, with its research team Future Interfaces Group, has made significant advancements in the immersion and realism of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) experiences, particularly in visual and audio experiences. The research group indicated that the research aimed to enhance VR eyewear available in the market without requiring any physical hardware that touches the wearer's face. They have developed a tactile feedback device that works in conjunction with VR eyewear to provide users with the sensations of the mouth, lips, and the surrounding areas.

According to the VR headset showcased by FIG last Wednesday and the ultrasonic sensor placed above the mouth, users can experience tactile feedback from the VR world without the need for physical contact. Users can simulate drinking from a water fountain, smoking, brushing their teeth, and even feel the sensation of a spider web passing over their lips. However, after conducting surveys with participants, the research team found that while adding oral tactile sensations in the virtual reality environment can enhance the sense of presence for most people, there is still room for improvement in simulating the tactile sensations of water using ultrasonic technology. According to the exhibition video, the team tested the combination of the sensor with the MetaQuest2 headset, and CMU stated that the goal is for this technology to become an accessory for any virtual reality headset.

It's worth noting that the team subsequently mentioned that they would work on making the overall design smaller and lighter. This technology is still in the prototype stage, and it will take some time before it enters the consumer market.
