"Previously at Meta (formerly known as Facebook), former cryptocurrency head David Marcus left the company after his Diem Coin project failed to materialize. Meta lost a valuable talent with his departure. Recently, David Marcus posted on his Twitter account that he and a team are in the process of establishing a new startup company that will utilize Bitcoin and the Lightning Network. In addition to Marcus, the new company includes other former Meta employees. It seems like he prefers being his own boss.
David Marcus has revealed very few details about the Lightspark project but mentioned that the company will explore, build, and expand the functionality and utility of Bitcoin. He also stated that the company will assemble a team to delve into the Lightning Network. It's likely that the company will create some form of cryptocurrency payment service, with initial funding led by a16z Crypto and Paradigm. David Marcus also assessed the recent downturn in the cryptocurrency market as a good time to focus on creating and delivering value.
He resigned from the Diem-related project at the end of last year, taking his team with him. It's great to see their unity!
Diem itself continues to exist in various forms. Former Diem developers announced a new blockchain called Aptos in February. Recently, Diem itself was sold to Silvergate Bank for $200 million. Meanwhile, Meta is currently focusing on integrating non-fungible tokens into its Meta and Instagram services. Under its MetaPay product line, it retained the Novi wallet, which was initially associated with David Marcus' cryptocurrency work. David Marcus is a longtime Meta employee, having worked at the company for over seven years. He led Meta's cryptocurrency wallet Novi for nearly four years and served as a board member for the Diem Association." |
