Baccarat, is recognized as one of the most civilized and fair entertainment activities worldwide. The origins of the game are disputed, with some gambling historians suggesting it originated in Sicily, while others believe it might have originated in Corsica. Some also speculate that Baccarat was developed during the late 17th century in France during the reign of Louis XIV. Regardless of its origins, Baccarat was initially a numerical gambling game played between a banker and a player. Each is dealt two cards, and the goal is to have the hand's total value closest to 9. Cards with portraits and 10s are counted as 0, hence the meaning of ""baccarat"" in Italian is ""zero.""
Another game often mentioned alongside Baccarat is a game called ""shimmy."" This game was popular among the highest-ranking French nobles in private gambling salons. In essence, shimmy is also a form of Baccarat, with the main difference being that both sides have the option to draw a third card. Over the centuries, a series of rules regarding the use of the third card and the collection of certain fees from each player evolved and changed. It wasn't until the late 1950s that shimmy, in the form of the Cuban game Baccarat, made its appearance in casinos.
In November 1959, the Sands Casino introduced the Cuban Baccarat game to the United States, referred to as ""Baccarat."" The Sands Casino Club, along with other casinos in Nevada, maintained the unique charm of this once exclusive game played by French nobility. Baccarat tables were placed in quiet and elegant chambers, with the banker dressed in formal attire and attractive ladies present to entice patrons. Today, the bets in Baccarat often exceed those of any other casino game, with some bets going up to $100. High rollers from the Far East and the Middle East frequently place bets as high as $100,000. The outcome of Baccarat games often determines the profitability of casinos for the month.
You don't need to be an oil magnate from the Middle East to play Baccarat, though. Many casinos offer smaller tables with lower minimum bets. Mini-Baccarat is usually played on smaller tables with the same rules as the regular game, but the bets are lower, often starting at $5.
Baccarat originated in France and gained popularity on the Monte Carlo square in Monaco. It later spread to the United States, where it further developed and its rules were refined, eventually gaining worldwide recognition for its fairness and civility. In the 1960s, Mr. Yip Hon brought Baccarat from the United States to Macau and gave it a name with an Eastern touch - ""Baccarat""
The game of Baccarat has three main bets: Banker, Player, and Tie. In this context, ""Banker"" and ""Player"" do not hold specific meanings but represent the two sides of the game, while ""Tie"" is a side bet introduced for added entertainment. Players can freely choose to place bets on the Banker, Player, or Tie, and the player with the highest wager gets the right to reveal the cards. |
