"When did you realize you had grown up? I guess for me, it was the moment my father left when I was a child. Growing up, what does that mean? And what does it mean when your father leaves? It means responsibility.
As I've gotten older, I've come to understand the pressures and responsibilities that come with being a father, especially as the eldest son in the family. The year my father left us, I was still in kindergarten. I used to ask my mother all the time, 'Where's Dad? Where did Dad go?' My mother would just look at me, speechless. Perhaps she couldn't explain things to me at that time.
Because I was just a child then. Gradually, as I grew older, I understood the hardships my mother went through when I was a child. I began to worry about family matters. I have a younger sister, and because my mother had to work two jobs a day, my sister was mostly left to her own devices. Thankfully, she was responsible, although she went through a bit of a rebellious phase during her high school years.
If you ask why I gamble, it's probably because of my father's influence. They say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, and he liked gambling. I couldn't escape it. I'm just grateful that I haven't been too deeply ensnared in it and can still keep it under control." |
