"Baccarat Total Point Value
The goal of the game is to get as close to 9 points as possible. Two cards are dealt to the player. The face value of all number cards is their point value, and Aces count as 1 point, while face cards count as 0 points. Only the units digit of the total points is considered; after 9 points, it wraps around to 0, 1, 2, and so on. In other words, if a player has a 2 and is dealt a 9, their total point value is 1. If they have a 6 and are dealt an 8, the total point value is 4. Simply put, when the total value reaches a two-digit number, you only consider the units digit as your point value. So, 18 equals 8, 17 equals 7, and so on.
Point Calculation Method
In Baccarat, Ace cards are counted as 1 point, numbered cards from 2 to 9 retain their face value, and 10, J, Q, and K cards are counted as 0 points (some casinos count them as 10 points). When the total points of all cards exceed 9, only the units digit is considered. Therefore, the maximum possible point is 9 (e.g., a 4 and a 5: 4 + 5 = 9), and the minimum point is 0 (also known as ""baccarat,"" e.g., a 10 and a Q: 10 + 10 = 20, where only the units digit, 0, is considered).
Dealing and Drawing Cards
Baccarat is typically played with eight decks of cards, and after shuffling, these eight decks are placed in a dealing shoe. Both the player and the banker will receive at least two cards each per round but no more than three cards. The first and third cards are dealt to the player, and the second and fourth cards are dealt to the banker. Whether a third card is drawn or not depends on the drawing rules, also known as the ""tableau."" Unlike blackjack, where players can make decisions, the drawing of the third card is predetermined by the rules of the game. Similarly, the banker's decision to draw or not is based on the player's point value, following predetermined rules.
Drawing Rules
The drawing of the third card depends on the total point value of the first two cards for both the player and the banker. The rules for drawing the third card are as follows:
0 - Draw one card, and the banker must draw one card.
1 - Draw one card, and the banker must draw one card.
2 - Draw one card, and the banker must draw one card.
3 - Draw one card if the player's third card is not an 8; otherwise, the banker does not draw.
4 - Draw one card if the player's third card is not a 0, 1, 8, or 9; otherwise, the banker does not draw.
5 - Draw one card if the player's third card is not a 0, 1, 2, 3, 8, or 9; otherwise, the banker does not draw.
6 - The banker does not draw unless the player draws a third card with a total point value of 1 to 5.
7 - The banker does not draw.
8 - Natural win for either the player or banker; no third card is drawn.
Betting in Baccarat
In Baccarat, you can bet on either the player or the banker to win. If you bet on the banker and the banker wins, you must pay a 5% commission to the casino. Betting on a tie is also an option, but it comes with relatively low odds, and it's generally not recommended.
Common Baccarat Terminology
Baccarat may seem complex, but it's actually quite straightforward. Here are some common terms used in Baccarat:
- Baccarat Table: The designated area where high-rollers can play without interference. It's not necessarily a ""pool"" and can sometimes be just a slightly elevated section of the casino floor.
- Chemin De Fer: A variant of Baccarat that requires more active participation from players.
- Drawing: Taking a third card. The decision to draw or not is determined by the rules before the game starts.
- Mini Baccarat: A faster-paced, lower-stakes version of Baccarat often played in the main casino area rather than exclusive high-roller rooms.
- Natural: A hand totaling 8 or 9 points, considered the best possible outcome in Baccarat.
- Stand: To refrain from drawing another card. This decision is based on the tableau rules.
- Trends: A way of analyzing the outcomes of previous hands to make betting decisions based on perceived patterns.
Baccarat Odds
In Baccarat, players can choose to bet on either the player or the banker. The payout rate for each bet is the same, but if you bet on the banker and the banker wins, you must pay a 5% commission to the casino. Betting on a tie typically offers odds between 7:1 and 9:1." |
