During the continuous rainfall brought on by the southwest monsoon (habagat) in the Greater Manila Metropolitan Area, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) swiftly took action by providing emergency assistance to the flood-prone Marikina City.
On September 2, 2023, PAGCOR handed over a total of 5,000 relief items to Janeth Obispo, the Administrator of Marikina. These relief items included 3,000 food packs and 2,000 non-food packs. The food packs contained essential items such as rice, canned goods, coffee, and chocolate drinks, while the non-food packs included blankets, mosquito nets, towels, slippers, and hygiene supplies.
These relief items were distributed to households residing in low-lying areas within the city, which are vulnerable to flooding. PAGCOR Chairman and CEO Alejandro Tengco emphasized the agency's swift response in providing much-needed assistance to the residents of Marikina City, particularly in the wake of the southwest monsoon and the impact of Typhoons Goring and Hanna.
Tengco stated, "A few days ago, we learned that the water level of the Marikina River had reached 15.7 meters, prompting the city government to prepare for evacuations. Consequently, I immediately instructed our Corporate Social Responsibility team to provide aid to affected families." Just about a month ago, PAGCOR also distributed food and non-food packs to over 31,000 households in various parts of Central Luzon affected by Typhoons Egay and Falcon.
