Elon Musk recently sent out a set of guidelines to Twitter employees on enhancing productivity, which are also applied in his Tesla and SpaceX companies. Let's take a look at them. Do you agree?
1. **Reduce the Number of Meetings**
Unless there is an urgent issue to address, meetings should serve the purpose of:
- Leveraging collective insights
- Identifying root causes
- Resolving problems
2. **Avoid Large Meetings**
Unless you are sure that you can provide value to the entire audience, even in such cases, keep it concise.
3. **Leave Unproductive Meetings**
Exit meetings if you do not contribute, provide value, or make decisions.
4. **Communicate Directly**
Use the shortest path to communication that gets the job done rather than following administrative "chain of command."
5. **Be Clear in Communication**
Avoid using:
- Abbreviations
- Meaningless words
- Jargon that requires additional explanation
6. **Use Common Sense**
Guide yourself with common sense and don't blindly follow rules, even if they are company policies.
I personally find these principles quite agreeable. Many people attend meetings merely to show their presence or for the sake of following procedures, or sometimes just for the free food. Have you heard any unusual reasons? Therefore, it has to be said that Musk is courageous in breaking the norm, doesn't care about external perceptions, as long as his companies grow! |
