Who is the biggest loser in a match? Certainly not the first-place finisher, but it's also not the one at the bottom of the rankings. There's a saying that the biggest loser in a match is the one who takes home the runner-up trophy. After all, they were just a step away from becoming champions, and the sense of near-miss disappointment can be the most powerful.
And it seems like the renowned manager José Mourinho embodies this saying. After Roma lost to Sevilla, Mourinho immediately tossed the runner-up medal he was wearing to a young fan in the stands, without even looking at it.
Although Mourinho hasn't enjoyed the same level of success in recent years as he did a decade ago, he has led his teams to multiple finals. For instance, he successfully guided Roma to the UEFA Europa Conference League title last year and took his team to the UEFA Europa League final this year. Mourinho also has a remarkable statistic - his teams have never lost a final once they've reached it. However, this time, Mourinho's record came to an end with a loss to the UEFA Europa League specialists, Sevilla.
Regardless of whether it was last year or this year, Mourinho shed tears after the final whistle, but last year, it was tears of joy due to victory, while this year, it was tears of bitter disappointment. It's clear how strong Mourinho's competitive spirit is.
There were also several controversial incidents during the final. For example, a handball by a Sevilla player was not called, and during the penalty shootout, the referee ruled that Roma's goalkeeper, Patricio, had moved off his line too early when saving Montiel's penalty. This allowed the Sevilla player to retake the penalty, which he scored. After the match, Mourinho was visibly angry and confronted the referee, Anthony Taylor, in the corridor, questioning his decisions. Later, he couldn't contain his frustration and went to the parking lot to confront Taylor further, using profane language to insult him.
This incident has now garnered significant attention, and UEFA has officially announced that they will charge Mourinho. It's hard not to think of Mourinho as the same old "Special One" from his earlier days, as controversies seem to suit him. What are your thoughts on Mourinho's actions? |
