Chelsea spent a total of £600 million in this year's June transfer window to strengthen their squad, but the results did not improve. Instead, due to unplanned signings, the squad became bloated, and the £600 million investment resulted in the club's worst league performance in over a decade. Looking back at these signings, while some players like Enzo may not have performed poorly, their performances did not justify the transfer fees paid by Chelsea. Players like Mudrick, who cost £100 million but did not score a single goal, were a clear disappointment. Chelsea's biggest issue in this season's transfers was overpaying for players. Excessive transfer fees can put undue pressure on players, as not everyone can handle the burden of such high price tags.
Beresford, as the new owner, must also take responsibility for his poor management decisions. In an attempt to distance himself from his predecessor, Beresford made sweeping changes to the entire support staff, especially the medical team. However, replacing the entire medical team was not an ideal solution, as there is a level of trust between players and medical staff that takes time to develop. The result was a season riddled with injuries, which negatively affected the team's performance.
Lastly, the choice of head coach played a significant role. This was another example of poor decision-making by Beresford's management team. Chelsea initially bought players that the then-coach admired, such as Aubameyang. However, shortly after signing Aubameyang, they sacked Tuchel and brought in a rookie coach, Potter. After supporting Potter for a few months and making signings based on his preferences, the management team succumbed to public pressure and sacked him. They then appointed Lampard, who turned out to be an even worse choice as an interim coach.
From numerous instances, it's clear that Chelsea's biggest problem is its chaotic management structure. Beresford has faced criticism from many industry professionals, with some calling him arrogant and ignorant, while others see him as a naive owner who spent the most money but received the worst results. However, Chelsea's next head coach has been confirmed as Pochettino, an excellent coach who led Tottenham to success. It remains to be seen if he can lead Chelsea out of this mess.
Chelsea's primary focus in the summer transfer window will undoubtedly be clearing out surplus players. If the new signings are talented, and Pochettino manages the team effectively, Chelsea has a chance to bounce back in the new season. |
