Baccarat is one of the simplest card games you'll come across. The game is played between two parties: the Player and the Banker. The objective is to have a hand total close to nine. It's important to remember that as a player, you're not actively competing against the Banker, unlike a game like Blackjack. The names of the parties could be John and Sally, as the primary purpose of the game is to bet on which side will have a hand total closer to nine.

Another important mention is regarding card values. In baccarat, 10s and face cards are worth zero, while an Ace is worth 1. Number cards from 2 to 9 are worth their face value. If the total points of the cards dealt exceed 10, the initial digit (1) is dropped. For example, if two 9s are dealt, their total points would be 8, not 18.

At the start of a round of baccarat, the Banker alternately deals two cards to the Player and the Banker. That said, the rules for the third card determine when and if a third card should be dealt, but you don't need to learn them as they are entirely handled by the Banker. If the total points of the Player's hand are zero to five, a third card is dealt. However, if the Player's hand total is six or seven, no third card is dealt. The same rules apply to the Banker if the Player hasn't received more cards. If a third card has been dealt to the Player, the Banker's drawing rules depend on the initial total and the Player's third card.
