The ranking of Poker hands is determined by their mathematical probabilities. The more unlikely a hand is to occur, the higher its ranking and the greater its potential to win the pot. For instance, a straight flush is a very rare hand, occurring only once in approximately 65,000 hands, whereas two pair is more common, appearing about once in every 21 hands.
In order to make informed bets in Poker, unless a player intends to bluff, they should only wager when they believe they hold a hand that could be the strongest. Without understanding what constitutes a good, fair, or poor hand, no Poker player can make intelligent bets. A table detailing the different Poker hands and the number of possible combinations for each in a deck of cards is provided.
