"In a surprising turn of events that unfolded a few months ago in Chumphon Province, Thailand, a man won a whopping 3.2 million baht in a lottery. However, he chose a rather unconventional way to celebrate and express his gratitude. He organized a unique 'graveyard feast,' inviting spirits to share in the joy.
Following Thai tradition, this fortunate individual decided to host a banquet at his hometown's graveyard as a token of appreciation to the spirits he believed had silently aided him. While this decision piqued curiosity and raised eyebrows, it sheds light on a special belief in Thai culture regarding spirits. According to reports, the eerie graveyard venue remained unoccupied by actual guests at the start of the feast. Nonetheless, 200 tables were adorned with a sumptuous spread, including Thai fish, simmered chicken, various appetizers, fried meats, soups, fried rice, and desserts, among eight courses. Additionally, an outdoor movie screening added a touch of festivity to the event.
This man's gesture is not an isolated incident, as there is a local Thai tradition where villagers celebrate winning by hosting feasts to commemorate the spirits. Whenever a villager makes a wish and wins a lottery, they follow this tradition to share their joy with the spirits. This tradition reflects the locals' belief in spirits and their gratitude for good fortune. It was mentioned that the fortunate man had entrusted a person named 'A-nan' to organize the banquet. He paid 10% of his winnings, totaling 240,000 baht, as the cost for hosting 200 tables. Each table had a budget of 1,200 baht, offering a lavish meal as a token of appreciation and giving back.
This unique event drew the attention and interest of nearby residents, who came to witness it and took home the leftover food once the spirits had dined. This act not only showed support and blessings for the fortunate man but also showcased traditional Thai culture. It's worth noting that last year, two women also hosted a feast at the Chumphon graveyard after winning. They spent 300,000 baht to treat over 5,000 grave residents to share in their joy and blessings. While such graveyard feasts might seem peculiar or eerie in other cultures, for the Thai people, it's a way to express gratitude and faith.
In Thai culture, spirits are regarded as coexisting with humans, and they have the potential to bestow blessings and assistance. Hence, hosting graveyard feasts is a way to show appreciation and respect for the spirits and celebrate the joy of unexpected fortune. Do you find such practices eerie? Feel free to share your thoughts!" |
