Manchester United has ultimately confirmed that head coach Erik ten Hag will remain in his position and is currently exploring the possibility of a contract extension. However, this does not mean that Ten Hag is completely safe. According to The Telegraph, Ten Hag still faces many internal and external challenges. Let's take a closer look at these issues.
Firstly, the biggest risk for Ten Hag comes from a lack of trust from the higher-ups. Although Ten Hag's stay has been confirmed, it is merely a result of compromise. According to media reports, Manchester United's owners, the INEOS group, had approached other coaches to replace Ten Hag, but none of those negotiations were successful. Therefore, the INEOS group had no choice but to announce the continued cooperation with Ten Hag.
However, Ten Hag's power at Manchester United will surely be significantly reduced. According to The Telegraph, INEOS is shocked by the extent of Ten Hag's transfer authority. They believe that no serious team would allow a head coach to persist in pursuing a player (De Jong) for 14 weeks during a transfer window, especially when the player has shown no interest in joining Manchester United from the start. There were also hurried signings like the £70 million transfer for the 30-year-old Casemiro. Furthermore, the overpriced €100 million transfer of Antony and the controversy surrounding Greenwood's return have left INEOS feeling embarrassed.
Therefore, there is no doubt that Ten Hag's transfer authority will be diminished. The two sides are currently pulling back and forth over the content of the renewal because Ten Hag still insists that he deserves more support, such as absolute control over the dressing room and the style of play. However, INEOS seems unwilling to grant Ten Hag so much power. Thus, even if Ten Hag stays, his future at Manchester United still requires more time to be assessed. |
