In reality, "second place in the game, friendship comes first" often serves merely as a teaching point, with few individuals actually practicing it, even in professional football. However, what's more important than practicing it is not being a sore loser. Unfortunately, in the football world, there is a coach from Portugal who doesn't adhere to this principle. He resorts to attacking the opposing coach with off-field factors after losing matches. This coach is Sérgio Conceição, currently coaching Porto in the Porto Primeira Liga.
The incident can be traced back to this year's UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg, where Porto lost to Arsenal in a penalty shootout. After the match, Conceição approached Arsenal manager Arteta, expecting their usual post-match handshake. However, Conceição refused to shake hands with Arteta and whispered several words in his ear. From Arteta's expression, it appeared the conversation wasn't particularly friendly. During a post-match interview, Conceição revealed that Arteta had insulted his family. He then mentioned that the person Arteta insulted was no longer alive and advised Arteta not to do such despicable things but to focus on coaching his team.
Conceição's comments stirred up controversy after the match. Arsenal immediately denied the allegations, but Porto persisted with their claims, stating that substitutes on the bench had also heard Arteta insulting Conceição's family. However, is this really the case? Online, netizens quickly found previous remarks from Conceição after losing matches. It turns out Conceição isn't a newcomer to using such tactics.
As early as 2020, Conceição had a dispute with Manchester City manager Guardiola. Following Porto's 3-1 defeat to Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League group stage, Conceição stated in a press conference that Guardiola disrespected their country, Portugal, which prompted him to retaliate. Then, after losing to Chelsea in the 2021 UEFA Champions League, Conceição once again claimed that Chelsea manager Tuchel insulted him. However, both of these claims were promptly denied by Manchester City and Chelsea. If it were only once, people might be willing to believe it, but since Conceição has repeatedly used the same approach, it's clear what kind of person he is. With so many false alarms, people now realize that Porto, who tolerate such coaches spreading rumors, also have issues.
Conceição can be said to have the worst character and is the sorest loser coach. Let's hope there are fewer coaches like him in the future. |
