In the world of football, player transactions are numerous, with many players coming and going. Among them, the most common are those labeled as "flops." Manchester United has historically purchased many players labeled as such, but when it comes to the most disappointing, Anthony from Ajax in the Eredivisie stands out. He was brought in for a hefty €100 million, but even if Manchester United were to offer him at half price, wealthy clubs like those from Saudi Arabia show no interest in acquiring him.
Anthony has had a dismal performance this season. Despite 27 rounds of Premier League matches, he has yet to score a goal or provide an assist. His poor showing has led Manchester United's manager, Ten Hag, to relegate him to the bench. Although Ten Hag later stated in the news that he hadn't abandoned Anthony and that his absence was due to tactical reasons, fans knew better. Anthony, the million-dollar man, was effectively sidelined.
Anthony himself earns a staggering £200,000 per week, making him one of the highest-paid players on the team. To alleviate the financial burden, Manchester United wants to sell him, but his poor performance has made European clubs uninterested. Even with a 60% reduction in the transfer fee, which amounts to €40 million, no club is willing to take him. This lack of interest raises concerns about Anthony's future.
What's even more embarrassing is that Saudi Arabia is currently aggressively buying stars for their league. However, even for the wealthy Saudis, acquiring Anthony is unappealing due to his tarnished image from domestic violence incidents and lack of outstanding skills. Therefore, unless Manchester United further reduces the transfer fee demands and Anthony lowers his wage demands, his career is likely to stagnate at Manchester United. |
