Teddy Sheringham, who played under Ferguson for four years, told talkSPORT what Ferguson's reaction would be if the situation at Manchester United was like it is now.
"I don't like going back to Ferguson's era because that was a long time ago, but if our form dipped, he would be shouting at us," he told talkSPORT. "It's like, 'You have to understand that playing for Manchester United is an honor; there are thousands of people around the world who want to play for Manchester United. So go out there and show the desire and pride of playing for Manchester United, and the respect you have when you wear the Manchester United shirt.'
"Now, in my opinion, it's not like that. In the match against Manchester City this weekend, I think sometimes in the Manchester derby, there might be two different outcomes. But when you play against Manchester City, they control the game for such a long time, and I think they might overwhelm Manchester United. In my view, it could be a heavy defeat.
"I've been saying for a while, for me, the problem with Manchester United is leadership. Look at the players available in the summer; for me, players like Kane and Rice, under Ferguson, they would have been sought after. At least they would have been prepared for those types of players, and this summer they haven't even prepared for bringing in players, which makes me uneasy.
"Once you have players like Kane and Rice playing professional matches every week, leading by example, other players will follow. Now, you look at Manchester United's players, they're just taking care of themselves. You don't need a Tony Adams in your team; just make sure everyone plays well, not just caring about their own performance but making sure the team plays well. Currently, there's no one in the team who can do that; it's like, 'Well, I'm doing my job,' and that's where the failure is." |
