When you see someone with band-aids on their hands at the baccarat table or in a high-stakes game, you need to be cautious, as they might be a cheat. Here, I'll explain a cheating technique in baccarat called 'taping.' Just from the name, you can probably guess what it involves: putting something on the playing cards. Taping comes in two forms: full-taping and partial-taping.
Let's take partial-taping as an example. Partial-taping means taping only the numbers, and it has some limitations:
1. You can't tape just any cards; it's limited to specific cards close in value, such as 2-3, 4-5, 6-7-8, 9-10.
2. You can't tape randomly; you must go from higher-value cards to lower-value cards.
In other words, you need to prepare four numbers: 2, 4, 7, and 9. These four numbers are represented by small squares. You need to cover the original numbers precisely without any errors. You must calculate in advance and execute it flawlessly. It requires courage, finesse, and quick hands.
For example, you can't tape 2 into 3; it must be 3 taped into 2. Take the number 3, for instance. You should place the small edges of two number 2 squares onto the number 3 without any misalignment. Once you've taped it, there's another issue of multi-colored points. 2 has one less point than 3, so there's an empty space on the tape. You should press it onto the extra point in the middle. Once you've done that, don't scrape it with your fingernail. It will look like 2 originally belonged there.
Similarly, you can tape 5 into 4, 7 into 6, 8 into 7, and 10 into 9. But, usually, you can't tape 8 into 6 because it has two extra points. It makes the process slow and time-consuming because taping two numbers and one extra point takes up a lot of time. It's not easy to notice any irregularities after taping. It will seem like the card originally had the number 2 on it.
This kind of manipulation is not for the average person. It's typically used by individuals in dire financial situations, as this cheating technique usually occurs in high-stakes baccarat games. Baccarat is less likely to expose cheating. In smaller games, it's not practical because it's easy to draw suspicion if you tape once and the next hand has two identical cards or one card missing. Unless it's a crucial hand, cheaters may prefer to leave the game quickly. Additionally, the probability of getting the specific combinations of numbers needed for this technique in crucial hands isn't very high. So, there's no guarantee of winning.
