On December 28th, in the NBA regular season, the Brooklyn Nets faced the Milwaukee Bucks at home, with the Bucks ultimately securing a 144-122 victory. After the game, Nets coach Vaughn was interviewed, and when asked about the game resembling an exhibition match, he responded:
"The greatness of this game is the people participating in it, all 450 of them, and they are all special. Being an NBA player is very special, and I treat them that way. I disagree with garbage time. That's what I said to our players. Until the game is over, you keep working, you compete, that's your livelihood. That's my job. I'm not sure if I sat down tonight. I've been standing coaching from the beginning to the end of the game, that's the intent. I have a lot of respect for those athletes. Regarding the mention of the word 'exhibition,' anyone tonight could end their career because of a game, so I think of it that way too. It's an honor, it's a gratitude, you make a living from this, never underestimate that. If you don't think so, you will pay the price. That's my approach tonight. Tonight, I coached these guys as best I could because they deserve it. Every player on the court tonight should be coached, and they should be on the court tonight."
