Former U.S. President Donald Trump has always been critical of Bitcoin. In a recent media interview, he went further, describing Bitcoin as a "scam," undermining the importance of Bitcoin and emphasizing that the true "world reserve currency" is the U.S. dollar.
The Central American country of El Salvador is seeking legislation to become the world's first country to "adopt Bitcoin as legal tender." Currently, the U.S. dollar is the only legal tender in El Salvador. If the proposal is formally approved, Bitcoin's legal status in the country will stand alongside the U.S. dollar.
"Bitcoin, it just seems like a scam, I was surprised— you know, it was worth $6,000 or even lower during our administration. I don't like it because it's another currency competing against the dollar. Essentially, it's a currency competing against the dollar," said Trump.
Trump also expressed that the world's currency should be the U.S. dollar and called for strict regulation of Bitcoin, stating:
"I think they should be very, very high regulatory. But the currency should be the dollar." |
