When a coach possesses the world's costliest squad yet fails to secure a championship, should he step down? Logically, such a coach should have left long ago. However, Gareth Southgate of the England national football team has remained in his position for seven years without clinching a title, and his tenure appears more stable than others. Why is that?

In recent years, English football has seen an influx of talent, including high-profile players like Bellingham, forward Harry Kane, wingers Saka, Rashford, and Grealish, as well as midfielder Rice, all with solid nine-figure valuations. The England national team now boasts the world's most expensive lineup. Many fans jest that this seemingly invincible England squad has only one weakness—their coach, Southgate.

With this formidable lineup, the sole objective for England should be to secure a championship. However, under Southgate's leadership, the team has failed to achieve this in seven years, with the best result being a runner-up finish in the UEFA European Championship and a semifinal exit in the FIFA World Cup. While these players are still young, Southgate has been criticized for not maximizing the team's potential in terms of tactics. Some argue that he tends to focus on certain aspects while neglecting others.

If there is one reason Southgate can stay, it might be his adept management of the locker room. The gathering of star players doesn't always guarantee success; previous England teams with star-studded lineups faced issues due to internal factions. However, under Southgate, even with numerous star players, the team maintains harmony. While there may be disagreements during club competitions, players come together harmoniously in the national team. The players support Southgate to continue as the head coach, perhaps the main reason he remains in his position.

Next year brings the UEFA European Championship, representing Southgate's final opportunity to prove his worth. If England fails to secure a championship once again, he may very well face departure, as these players deserve a coach who can take them further.

Every year they are considered favorites, but consistently fall short. Despite that, England's recent performance is not bad, and Gareth Southgate is actually quite well-regarded.

The overall high valuation of England is primarily due to hype, inflated values, and paperwork, with the actual strength being roughly half of the stated values. Moreover, comparing the current England team to the one from the early 2000s, it can't be considered as star-studded. The current squad lacks the glamour and luxury associated with the team from the early 2000s.

I think Southgate is likely to remain as a coach for another year.

I believe evaluating a coach requires considering various factors, including team performance, tactical strategies, player development, and team management. Currently, Gareth Southgate has shown positive aspects in team cohesion and player support. However, the final assessment may depend on future performances in upcoming events.

England doesn't seem to produce many strong national team coaches, as evidenced by the fact that most top clubs in the Premier League are managed by foreign coaches. Southgate is arguably the most outstanding local coach to emerge in recent years. He initially entered the national team setup as the coach for the England U21 team and was appointed interim coach in 2016 before becoming the permanent coach a few months later.

Southgate's achievements with the England national team over the past few years are the best in recent memory. England, once considered a football powerhouse in Europe, often performed exceptionally well in qualifiers but struggled in the main tournaments. Under Southgate's leadership, England reached the final of the UEFA European Championship and the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup, marking the team's best performances in years. Given the expectations and the team's composition, Southgate has exceeded expectations. At only 53 years old, he is relatively young in his coaching career and seems to be on an upward trajectory.

The high market value of England's national team players may create an illusion of strength, but the prevalence of English players in the Premier League significantly inflates their prices compared to equally skilled foreign players. Southgate's success may also be attributed to his ability to work with the players in the English football system. He has already been in charge for several years, and at 53, he has the potential to continue leading the team for at least eight more years.

Looking ahead to the UEFA European Championship in 2024, England is considered a strong contender. However, overcoming powerhouses like France to win the championship will not be an easy task. Best wishes to Gareth Southgate for continued success.

It's hard to comprehend, as coaches should ideally prioritize factors like management and technical skills over player market value when making decisions. Although England hasn't won a championship, their performance has been relatively decent.
