Considering the implicit rules of blackjack, if the dealer has a hand totaling 16, they must continue to draw cards. Many cards with values exceeding 10 will increase the dealer's chances of exceeding 21 and result in a higher probability of the dealer losing. A deck with low-value cards will increase the dealer's chances of getting a hand of 20 or 21, disadvantaging the players and increasing the likelihood of the dealer winning. Additionally, a deck with low-value cards will decrease your chances of getting a hand of 21.

Card counting assigns a point value to each card, either adding or subtracting points according to predetermined rules. A freshly shuffled deck starts with a point total of 0. Positive points indicate that high-value cards are predominant, while negative points suggest an abundance of low-value cards. This counting method is known as the blackjack card counting system. The following are point assignments for each card:

- Cards 10 and above: -1
- Cards 3 to 6: +1
- All other cards: 0

The count is used to make decisions on betting, doubling down, surrendering, or maintaining the current bet. When there are more high-value cards remaining, players can place higher bets, increasing the chances of the dealer busting (exceeding 21). This serves as a fundamental strategy in playing blackjack.

Another crucial factor is the discard rate, which represents the percentage of cards dealt before reshuffling. A higher discard rate enhances the accuracy of your calculated point values. It's advisable to avoid placing larger bets when the discard rate falls below 70%.

Additionally, in many situations, multiple decks may be used, necessitating an adjustment to your expected point count by dividing it by the number of decks. For example, if the calculated point count is 10 and there are two decks, the adjusted count would be 10/2 = 5.

Progressive betting strategies involve gradually adjusting bets based on the calculated point count, increasing bets as the win rate improves. Progressive betting can be combined with other betting mechanisms, such as not increasing the bet if there is no win or returning to the minimum bet after a loss.

A few considerations on card counting: One must be able to quickly calculate card points, even in a somewhat distracting environment. Choosing a table with fewer players can prevent interference from others. Practice at home with distractions, such as the TV or someone engaging in conversation, until you can swiftly count cards under various conditions. It's essential to maintain a low profile in the casino, as card counting is often prohibited. If the casino suspects card counting, they may ask you to leave, so it's crucial to appear like any other player at the table.
