Main shard is responsible for coordinating small shards through a manager contract, while the universe stores different data or smart contracts. This allows different processes to execute synchronously, speeding up the blockchain's processing speed.
In addition to announcing the arrival of sharding on Twitter, Buterin also discussed the technology briefly on the Reddit forum. He mentioned that the main goal of sharding is a large-scale improvement in scalability. The simulation on Twitter shows 12 shards, but in reality, there will be approximately 100 shards, each with a capacity equivalent to or possibly exceeding the existing Ethereum blockchain.
Buterin also pointed out that once the Casper version with the Proof of Stake (PoS) mechanism enters the final stage, the new sharding code will be integrated into the Ethereum blockchain.
Despite the announcement that sharding is coming soon, there may still be some steps left until the final completion. Buterin mentioned on Twitter:
I wouldn't say the spec is finalized at this point, although it's pretty well-baked in my mind. The latest research is about combining ideas for scaling and latency reduction. |
