The Thai House of Representatives has taken a significant step toward legalizing future casino facilities. They have decided to appoint a committee of 60 members to investigate this idea. According to the Bangkok Post, the committee's work is expected to be completed within 90 days.
This move follows similar efforts by the House of Representatives in December 2021. At that time, they established a group to explore the legalization of various forms of gambling, including casinos. The group, known as the "Special Committee for the Consideration of Entertainment Complexes, Legal Casino Revenue and Taxes, Prevention and Resolution of Illegal Gambling, Widespread Electronic Gambling Machines, and Online Gambling Issues," submitted a report to the Thai National Assembly in July 2022, proposing the introduction of casino resorts.
The committee recommended allowing the establishment of "entertainment complexes" featuring legal casinos throughout the country. This decision came after the national elections in Thailand on May 14th, following which a new House of Representatives was formed. After months of coalition government negotiations, the new government took office in September.
In predominantly Buddhist Thailand, the legalization of casino gambling has long been a controversial issue. Several neighboring countries in Southeast Asia, such as Cambodia, Laos, and Malaysia, have legal gambling industries. |
