According to ESPN, Klay Thompson and the Warriors are in a contract negotiation dilemma. Klay is hoping to reach an early contract extension with the Warriors before his contract expires next year.

From subsequent information, Klay's team is leaning towards a long-term contract, possibly for four or five years, while also hoping for a maximum salary.

However, the Warriors are not enthusiastic about this idea as they hope Klay can help free up salary space for the team. The Warriors have been dealing with luxury taxes year after year, and it's become challenging for them to sustain this.

Klay Thompson is in a tricky situation as he's no longer the same player he once was, and the Warriors are looking to explore younger and more cost-effective options. Klay wants a top-dollar contract, but the Warriors are hesitant to offer such a high salary.

Now, Klay finds himself in a delicate situation. The Warriors are heading into a phase where they need more young talent, and Klay occupying a significant portion of the salary cap might not be in the team's best interest.

Additionally, as the team's roster gets older, the challenges facing the Warriors in the upcoming season will be tougher. It raises questions about Klay's tactical role, whether he can still be the offensive focal point, and what kind of value he brings to the team.

Before this contract renewal issue was disclosed, Klay had already expressed dissatisfaction with his role on the team.

Since his return from a major injury, Klay's athletic performance has significantly declined. His off-ball movement isn't as sharp as before, and his defense and agility have diminished. His prized three-point shooting has also been affected due to lower-body strength issues, which led to accuracy problems.

While Klay could still be a starting player, it's not viable to have him as the primary offensive finisher outside of Stephen Curry.

If the team has an advantage on the front line, it may not be ideal to rely on Klay for perimeter finishing. In high-stakes games like the playoffs, an aging Klay with reduced defensive capabilities and less accurate shooting is a vulnerability.

If the Warriors are genuinely considering offering Klay a retirement contract, a four-year, $25 million contract or even a $30 million contract when the team's salary cap situation allows could be viable options. However, it's important to acknowledge that while Klay can still contribute, he can't be expected to play extensively.

It might be a good idea to test the free-agent market and understand your own value.

True, his defense wasn't elite-level before either.
