Why don't retired cricket players become umpires?

Unlike commentators, why don’t retired cricketers become umpires? What can be the reason?

Umpiring is a different job altogether.
As a retired cricketer, turning into a commentator requires knowledge of the game (which they have) and fluency in the language they will commentate. However, for umpiring, this requires in-field decision-making and accuracy. Therefore, commentating is a relatively less complicated work than that of an umpire.

Who says so? Check Simon Taufel and Aleem Dar.
Simon Taufel from Australia and Aleem Dar from Pakistan are considered two of the greatest umpires of the 21st century. With incredibly accurate umpiring and track records, both have successfully made a well-famed umpiring career. Both of these umpires were once cricketers in their domestic circuit as well. Thus, some players retired as a cricketer and made it into the elite ICC Umpire Panel.

Umpiring is not for everyone!
Umpiring is a tough job that makes or breaks the game. With bad umpiring and decision-making, this could well enrage the opposing teams and can lead to severe game-changing consequences. Hence, unless well-trained, umpiring at the international level needs a separate career path altogether.
