Blackjack is the only game in the casino where players need to count cards, meaning they must remember all the cards that have been played and decide how to play the remaining ones. As the name suggests, in blackjack, players must not exceed a total of 21 points with the sum of the points on the cards they hold. During the game, players are dealt cards and can request additional cards, and then they compare their hands to determine the winner, with the one closest to 21 points winning. While there is an element of luck in the game, experienced players can calculate the probabilities logically to increase their chances of winning.
Card Counting in Blackjack
In 1962, Dr. Edward Thorp, a professor at the University of California, published the book "Beat the Dealer," revealing that blackjack can be beaten using card counting techniques. Players use card counting to analyze information about the composition of the deck before it's shuffled and find betting opportunities. Over the long term, card counters have an advantage ranging from 0.5% to 1.5% over the dealer, although short-term advantages may not be very significant. To be successful at card counting, one must count cards quickly and have a solid grasp of strategy.
One method of card counting assigns point values to cards: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 are counted as +1, 10, J, Q, K, A as -1, and 7, 8, 9 as 0. As each card is dealt, the player mentally adds and subtracts these values. If the count is positive, indicating that there are more small cards already played, there is a higher chance of big cards coming up, which is favorable for the player, and they should place larger bets. When the player determines that the chances of winning are significantly increased, they bet big; otherwise, they bet small. This strategy allows players to win big when they win and lose little when they lose, ultimately giving them an edge over the dealer.
Although 10, J, Q, K, A are all counted as -1, it's important to keep track of the number of Aces that have been played separately because when there are a lot of unseen Aces, the chances of getting a blackjack increase, and the player should increase their bets. When a player has an Ace, they are more likely to get a 10-point card. |
