Manchester United is set to embark on a new round of squad rebuilding, with reports suggesting that apart from a few designated players, the rest of the squad could be up for sale this summer. Surprisingly, club captain Bruno Fernandes, despite being the top scorer and assist leader this season, is not among those listed. Facing rumors of not being indispensable, Fernandes openly admits that he may not stay at Manchester United next season.

Since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United's post-Ferguson era has seen its fair share of transfer pitfalls, with Bruno Fernandes being one of the few success stories amidst numerous signings. Thanks to his outstanding performances, Fernandes was appointed team captain this year, contributing 15 goals and 11 assists, making him the top scorer and assist leader. However, his stellar performances haven't guaranteed his place, as per reports from the British media, only three or four players, such as Højlund, Garnacho, Kobbie Mainoo, and goalkeeper Andre Onana, are deemed untouchable, with Fernandes not among them.

This undoubtedly comes as a blow to Fernandes, who expressed on a Portuguese TV show, "Clearly, it doesn't just depend on me, does it? A player needs to want to stay, but at the same time, the club needs to want him to stay. At the moment, I think it's like that. I haven't thought much about the future, at least because this season hasn't reached the level I hoped for, neither individually nor collectively."

Fernandes emphasizes that he won't dwell too much on the future at the moment, as Manchester United still has important matches to play this season, such as the FA Cup final, and there's the European Championship in the summer. He leans towards making plans after the Euros, but admits that the future is uncertain, whether he will stay at Manchester United next season remains unknown.

After all, since the future is uncertain, Bruno Fernandes's focus on the game seems like a sensible approach. I think it's the right attitude.

Shouldn't it be the coach that Manchester United is letting go? Yet, it turns out the coach isn't leaving, and the players are fleeing on their own.

It's evident that Bruno Fernandes has reached his peak and is unlikely to achieve greater heights. Moreover, with his current high market value, he's a plug-and-play player with no shortage of buyers. If the club indeed opts for a coaching overhaul, selling Fernandes would be a smart choice, at least in terms of recouping a significant amount of funds.

Bruno Fernandes is currently 30 years old. Considering the physical fitness of modern players, a disciplined athlete should be at the peak of their career at the age of 30. Therefore, Bruno's strength shouldn't diminish. This can be seen in his performance this season. Although Manchester United's performance this season has been average and there's a high probability of further rebuilding in the summer, it's unlikely that they will sell off all their players and start anew. Currently, Bruno Fernandes is considered the midfield core and captain of Manchester United. While he may not be the ideal captain, there are currently no better options in the team. So, I don't think Bruno will leave this summer unless he is marginalized, prompting Manchester United to consider letting him go. This summer is crucial for Manchester United as they will not be participating in the Champions League next season. They may likely part ways with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the summer, and the arrival of a new manager will bring uncertainty for every player. Different coaches have different tactical approaches and team compositions. Some currently marginalized players might receive more opportunities under the new coach, while some currently favored players might be discarded. As a professional player, it's best not to dwell too much on things that haven't happened yet. For Bruno Fernandes, the most important thing right now is to help Manchester United win the FA Cup and lead the Portuguese national team to a successful campaign in the European Championship this summer.

To be honest, Manchester United currently doesn't deserve to have top-tier players. A third-rate European team should be struggling at the bottom of the Premier League or in the Championship. While this statement may sting, it's an undeniable fact. Coincidentally, this year is also a European Championship year, and Bruno Fernandes and other players are certainly thinking about how to compete for the trophy. Besides that, there's the FA Cup, although it holds less significance. Manchester United players are treated like commodities, constantly bought and sold, with no regard for the team's performance or the fans' sentiments. Such management has no future, and the team has no hope. Once Manchester United exhausts this batch of old fans, and new fans fail to replace them, it will likely be the end. Bruno Fernandes is currently Manchester United's mainstay. Whether you look at his goal-scoring or assist numbers, he's top-tier. If Manchester United were to let go of such a key player, it would signify the club's dire condition.
