April midway, first of the season's Big Five league champions emerged! Bayer Leverkusen, Bundesliga's newcomer champions, securing their first title in 120 years. Who would have thought the team, once struggling in relegation last season, could overcome giants like Bayern Munich to clinch the title?
Last season, Leverkusen had a rough start. In the 2022-23 season, they suffered three consecutive defeats, winning only one out of their first eight matches. However, a turning point came after their 4-0 thrashing by Bayern in the 8th round. Leverkusen decided to sack their coach and brought in rookie manager, Xavi Alonso, a move that stirred controversy given his lack of coaching experience despite his illustrious playing career.
However, Alonso's performance quickly silenced critics. Although he won only one out of his first seven matches in charge, Leverkusen later enjoyed two winning streaks, including avenging their defeat against Bayern at home. This season, Leverkusen has been even stronger, remaining unbeaten in all competitions, extending their unbeaten streak to 43 matches. With Bundesliga title already secured, the German Cup within reach, and a 2-0 lead against West Ham United in the first leg of the Europa League knockout stage, Leverkusen is on the verge of achieving a treble.
Founded in 1904, Leverkusen had never won the Bundesliga title in their history, making this triumph an unimaginable dream for many fans. However, they did it! Furthermore, head coach Alonso, a key figure in their success, has announced his intention to stay at Leverkusen next season, increasing the likelihood of retaining key players like Wirtz. As Leverkusen gears up for Champions League football next season, anticipation mounts for what surprises they might bring. Let's wait and see! |
